When the god Seth killed and dismembered his brother Osiris, Anubis helped the mourning goddess Isis. He put the pieces of the god's body back together, embalmed them, and wrapped them in linen. With this first ritual of mummification, Anubis defeated final decay and granted Osiris eternal life in the underworld.

Anubis was born from a secret, forbidden night of love between the goddess Nephthys and the god Osiris. Fearing the revenge of her husband Seth, Nephthys abandoned the newborn in the reeds. However, the gentle Isis found the child, raised him like her own son, and made the outcast jackal god her most loyal protector.

Because wild jackals plundered human graves in early times, the Egyptians elevated the animal to a divine guardian. Anubis became the ruler of the necropolises, patrolling the desert mountains at night.
