Everything that is dark belongs to Hecate. She ruled over both the living and the underworld and is often depicted with keys in hand as the goddess of the boundaries between the two worlds.

She is also accompanied by a black dog, which is rumored to have inspired Cerberus, the three-headed dog at the gates of Hell. As a protective goddess, she was often placed at the entrances of houses to prevent misfortune from entering.

Hecate is even mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare. The Blackburn Cult, a religious group with predominantly female members active in the 1920s, practiced some rituals associated with the worship of Hekate, including tendencies toward the practice of magic.<br>
