Psyche, the personified soul

The term “psyche” comes from ancient Greek and means breath, breath, soul and butterfly. The butterfly is seen as the embodiment of the soul.
She is not part of the Olympian family of gods, but is considered a mortal or demigod.

Story behind Psyche

The youngest of three mortal princesses, “Psyche” is so extraordinarily beautiful that even Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, feels threatened. Because she fears that people will turn away from her in order to worship the even more beautiful Psyche. Therefore, Eros, her son and god of love, is supposed to make Psyche fall in love with the ugliest and worst creature.

Legend of Cupid and Psyche

But when Eros sees the beautiful Psyche, his life is over. He falls in love with her and ignores Aphrodite's orders.
Instead, Cupid himself fell in love with Psyche and secretly took her to his palace. However, Psyche became overwhelmed by her curiosity and tried to see her lover's face in the dark, leading to a series of tests that she had to pass to prove her love.

Aphrodite tortures Psyche and gives her four adynata (impossible tasks). Various forces and creatures come to Psyche's aid so that she can complete the first three tasks. Finally, she is supposed to bring up a box of beauty ointment for Aphrodite from the underworld (from Proserpina). In her curiosity, Psyche opens shortly after hers
Return the rifle and fall into a deep, deathly sleep.

Cupid awakens her by stabbing her with one of his arrows.
At Cupid's request, Jupiter ensures a reconciliation between Aphrodite and Psyche and elevates Psyche to the status of goddess.
